The Last Mission

The Last Mission

In August 1945 rebel Japanese troops seized the Imperial Palace and placed Emperor Hirohito under house arrest in an attempt to seize the radio address that Hirohito was to deliver the next day announcing Japan's surrender to the Allies. The operation failed and the recording aired as planned.

Why did it fail and what did this coup attempt have to do with a planned B-29 strike on a Japanese oil refinery? The answers to these questions are revealed in this documentary based on a soon-to-be-published book by the radio operator on that B-29.
