Born the youngest son of Prince Mahidol, King Bhumibol spent most of his childhood and teens in Switzerland. He acceded to the throne in1946 after his brother, King Ananda, died mysteriously from a gunshot. Young King Bhumibol would become Thailand’s longest serving monarch, seeing the country through the cold war, military coups and some of its worst natural disasters. The King is loved and respected for his tireless efforts to improve the lives of his people. To date, he has initiated some 4000-development projects ranging from education to agriculture. To the people of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the father of this modern nation, a man who has ruled with compassion, love and faith.
